Team Variety Runner Shares Incredible Story of Support
I originally came to Variety needing a spot in the race, as I had registered by regular mail and my registration was never received. However, what has transpired since then has been a phenomenal experience as well as a restoration of faith in mankind for me!
I have known about The Variety Club and all that it affords children with special needs as my uncle was honored by the LA Chapter a few years back as their "man of the year" for his work with the children at Los Angeles County, Women’s and Children’s Hospital. What I didn’t realize, however, was that when reminded of Variety and their good works, there were so many willing to support the cause. I sent an e-mail out to family and friends this past Sunday night, one week pre-marathon. In just a hair over 24 hours, my Variety donation goal had been met! I received an overwhelming number of e-mails from those who were not only supportive of my run, but thrilled to see that the cause I was running for was Variety.
So many shared stories of their knowledge and experiences with Variety, their outstanding programs and all that they offer to so many.
As a mother of two healthy kids, I know that am a truly fortunate parent. Their days at school are full, stimulating and challenging. Their weekends are full of socializing and sports, learning teamwork and working toward a common goal. They sometimes live the thrill of victory and at times the agony of defeat. What more could a parent want for their child?
For many kids with special needs, Variety provides opportunities like those mine have. Experiences they may not otherwise know. I have been a long time runner, including several other marathons.
Last year I sustained an injury which kept me from running the Philadelphia Marathon, as well as several other distance races. This injury required months away from running and a lot of physical therapy. So, although mine was temporary, to a much, much lesser degree, I have some understanding of how challenging a disability can be. It is truly amazing what Variety offers these children and their parents who face far tougher and permanent challenges. I’m back for what I’m pretty sure will be my last full marathon. Running for the Cause, for Variety, has enhanced my experience and ensured that this will be my most memorable run!
Regards,
Pam Nason
