Variety Autism Events

Variety’s Autism Resource Initiative puts together special events just for children with autism and their families.  These events provide families affected with autism an opportunity to enjoy time together in a fun, upbeat, and accepting environment.

Annual Sesame Place Day for Children with Autism

For more than 20 years, Sesame Place, the nation’s only theme park based entirely on the award-winning television program, Sesame Street, opens its gates to Variety’s children and their immediate families as a special event at the beginning of each season.  Sesame has given over 200,000 Variety’s children a day they’ll always remember.

Special accommodations are made to make sure all children, regardless of their disability, have an enriching experience.  The goal is for all children to take pride in their accomplishments as they explore the theme park and experience in their own personal way.  For some children, mingling with the Sesame Street characters and seeing the musical shows is an accomplishment.  For others, it may be climbing up the three stories of cargo nets on Nets’n’ Climbs, or it’s the thrill of riding in Flyn’ Fish in Elmo’s Word, the playland dedicated to the popular red, furry character.

Created in 1987 as a pre-opening event for Variety families, it expanded to include the closing day of each season.  In 2007 an additional day was included dedicated to children with autism.

Over the years Sesame has made special accommodations for our children.  They include:

Variety also provides an extensive resource fair for parents to peruse and learn whilst the family plays.  It’s a day for everyone!

Registration begins 6 weeks before the event.  Please be sure to check our calendar of upcoming events for official registration and dates!

Autism Awareness Night at the Please Touch Museum

Since 2010 Variety had partnered with the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia to provide children with autism and their families a night of hands-on learning as they explore the museum’s various exhibits.

Autism Awareness Night at Adventure Aquarium on the Camden Waterfront

New in 2012!  For one special night, Adventure Aquarium will open its doors just to children with autism and their families.  Come explore "America’s Most Touchable Aquarium"!  Accommodations will be made to the venue for children’s sensory comfort.  Dozens of autism-related organizations will also be participating in a resource fair!  Proceeds from this event benefit Variety’s Autism Initiative.
