Support for families and caregivers includes:
- First Step: Support to families when they are concerned about a child’s development, often before there is a diagnosis.
- Consultation is offered by phone, e-mail, office or home visit to understand a family’s concerns and help to connect them to educational and other service providers to have their questions answered.
- Call Center: A counselor is available to respond to calls, questions and concerns, to give parents of children with autism direct access to information and resources, including service providers and support groups in their communities. Variety’s goal is to bridge the gap between and help parents and caregivers coordinate services among the medical, educational and behavioral health systems.
- Next Steps: Support to families after they have received a diagnosis to help understand the multi-dimensional aspects of the Autism Spectrum
- This formal workshop presentation includes presentations by a speech pathologist, an occupational therapist discussing their disciplines, the interfacing of the medical, educational, and behavioral health services and a panel discussion with parents of children who have Autism Spectrum diagnoses and the distribution of educational resource materials.
- Equal Access Programs: Special days throughout the year to allow for special accommodations at community sites such as our day for children with autism at Sesame Place
- Family Fun Days: Opportunities for entire families to enjoy themselves in an accepting, non-judgmental atmosphere with child-friendly activities
- Developmentally appropriate (and inclusive) playgroups for ALL children up to 5 years of age
The resource center provides educational materials and a lending library jointly run with the Penn Foundation. The center provides access to the internet, videos, and CD ROMs in addition to books and journal articles.
