What is Autism?

Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder typically diagnosed before 3 years of age.  An autism diagnosis involves deficits in three core areas: social interaction, use of language and behaviors and interests.  It crosses a spectrum that ranges from relatively mild difficulties to severe challenges and the symptoms may change over time.  Recent research has revealed that causation is a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

While there is no documented cure, through early intervention and treatment the various symptoms associated with autism can be improved.

Prevalence

The CDC estimates that 1 in 110 children are diagnosed with autism.  In boys, the rate increases to 1 in 70. Some studies reveal that 1 in every 58 boys are being diagnosed with autism today.

Diagnosing Autism

Parents are usually the first to notice unusual behaviors and or failure to reach appropriate developmental milestones.  Some parents describe a child that seemed different from very early on, while others describe a child who was developing normally and then experienced a sudden regression.  Symptoms include: delay or loss of language, communication difficulties, repetitive behaviors, impaired eye contact, attachment to objects and sensory processing disorder.

If you suspect your child may be affected review autism’s red flags at http://www.firstsigns.org/concerns/flags.htm, fill out the baseline Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) http://www.autism.com/ind_atec_survey.asp  and contact a medical professional or licensed psychologist for an evaluation.

Where to begin

Learning that your child has autism can be an extremely overwhelming experience.  Your first step in this journey is to educate yourself.  Reaching out to parent support groups, attending workshops and conferences will help you to help your child reach his/her fullest potential.  Early intervention, no matter which treatment you choose, is key! And remember you are your child’s best advocate!

Support

Over the years Variety has provided a place for children with disabilities to experience a sense of belonging. We at the Autism Resource Center of Variety understand that the autism journey is a difficult one and it is through other parents that we find the strength.   In addition to providing access to the many support groups in the area, Variety will continue to create events for the entire family, deliver parent education workshops, weekend retreats, and social skills groups.
