Of Socials and Spectrumites
by Elizabeth Lipp

Good weekend, we went to the ice cream social at school on Friday night and Nic was hanging out with a bunch of girls doing this rapel gadget (sort of like a monkey bar, but it has a handle and is on a runner and you launch yourself off and glide down to the other end). We swam on Saturday and got the rest of Nic's school supplies and yesterday we went to see the trains at the Arboretum (it's circus week).
So, Nic is sitting at lunch with the other AS kids and not happy about it. Gabe's IEP meeting is Wed am. Nic went out to play with perky, perfect next-door-neighbor kid when we got back from the arboretum and ten minutes later, he's in their driveway, building his track, no other kids to be found. I told him to collect his stuff and come in and asked him when was he going to figure out that they are not interested in playing with him.
Him to me: this is NOT sad, mom.
Don't get it. Nic can hang with any other AS kid and together he and whomever look typical. Pair him with an NT and it doesn't work out. Why is that? Last month, when we went to see my friend from HS, her little boy was waiting out front. Nic said happily "He's like me, mom." We didn't even get out of the car, no interaction-he just *sees* it.
My friend says Nic recognizes his tribe. I believe it.
