He’s got a friend
by Elizabeth Lipp

I didn't mean for this to become a daily blog, but Nic has literally had something new and different happen every day this week.
So we had the 4th parade as ever through our neighborhood, and we sat next to the perfect family next door (it's mindblowing how different their kids are in the presence of their parents--and yes, you can read that as they were VERY nice, faultlessly so, to my kids during the parade). Nic was as ever, happy to watch the fire trucks and point out the parts of the vintage cars going by.
The highlight was when his friend Bryce called out "HEY NIC" from one of the classic cars going by. Nic, who had just told me he never wantedto be in a parade, announced he'd be more than happy to be in one if he could hang with Bryce. (And apparently Perky et al were stunned that Nic had a friend who would actually publicly announce himself like that).
So DH took the boys out to the local big box store to get more propane for our grill, and they both went nuts.
I took the boys to hit some balls around our local tennis court. We walked because we could, but I think we walked more than we played. Nic took his scooter, I carried the balls and racquets and Gabe brought along lightning McQueen. Andy called and let us know dinner was on the grill, so we headed back.
Passing the local playground, I saw Bryce, who saw me and wanted to know where Nic was.
"You didn't see him? He just went by on his scooter." I went to the corner and saw Nic halfway down the block. He had stopped and looked back when I called him.
"Nic!" Bryce yelled and took off after him on his bike.
That just stopped me where I stood. A little boy asking for Nic, chasing after him. I heard Nic say "Bryce! I'm so glad to see you!"
Two of Bryce's friends took off on their bikes to see what was going on. I waited for G and joined them. I kind of took my time. Regardless of what Nic was saying to that little knot of boys, this was a sight worth savoring.
So, the upshot is that Bryce gave Nic directions to his house. And we had passed them on the way home from the pool Thursday night. Bryce had called for Nic, but Nic had zoomed by on his scooter and never heard him.
I thought Bryce would forget about Nic once school was over. He hasn't. They will not be in class this coming school year, but maybe it's not the end of the world.
Because it looks like Nic has really found a friend.
